State Boxcars... Where Can I find Them?

Hello all,

Does anyone know where I can find State boxcars for an HO scale layout? I understand Tyco had a State of the union set but Im having a hard time finding them online. I have the Georgia car from this set and Ebay currently has the Maine, North Carolina , And Pennsylvania cars listed that Im bidding on. Does anyone know where to find more of theses cars? Did the set have all 50 States? Are there other sets of State cars? I dont care if they match , I just need them all.

I built a track around my sons ceiling that goes around his whole room. My Idea is to line up the boxcars in the order they became states. His track has plenty of room for 50 cars and I have 6 GP-50’s to pull them, I just need the cars.

I would be thankful for any help.

Thank You

Keith

Bad news for you…read below.

There are six cars that make up TYCO’s Commemorative State Box Car series. The car used is the 50’ plug-door box car, which is cataloged as model number 339 in its most basic offering. This set of six was cataloged in 1975-76 and 1976 only. The images shown are taken from those catalogs. Notice the steps are open on these examples, the samples I possess all feature filled-in steps. I assume both likely exist and I’ve simply not run across the ‘open-step’ version yet.

The choice of states does not appear to make any specific group. With only six, they certainly are not representing the original thirteen colonies. Perhaps TYCO had plans to produce more and interest or sales did not materialize for this series. In the late '70s, Mantua offered a set of cars similar to this group with each lettered for a state of the union. Some collectors may confuse them with this set, but note that only the six below make up TYCO’s mid 1970’s collection of Commemorative State Box Cars.

Back around the bicenteniel (sp) I think MDC did a set also. You might try E Bay.

MTL completed the 50+ car N scale set last year. The + comes from the DC & the Territory cars MTL did for the Nscale Collectors. They also had a FT A & B & aCaboose to finish the train. You will need to go to *bay to get a complete set. It may be easier to find some of the individual state cars. A pair of powered FT’s will easily pull the 50+ car set.

MTL has announced for June delivery a new Z scale program. The cars will be similar to the Nscale ones. MTL is making a big push into Z scale.

You could always make your own? Get some undecorated box cars and add maps and text to suit. Since they are going to be up high they could look fine.
