Statesville NC Railfan Suggestions?

Looks like I may have a morning next week to railfan around Statesville NC. Any suggestions?

Yes–motor over to Salisbury. That’s on the old Southern Rwy. mainline, the depot is gorgeous and offers great shots, and you can scanner onto the PBX there.

or Hamlet I would say that the Hamlet depot looks much better since it got a make over.

speaking of hamlet their rail days in on October 28-30,I belive also I think it was in TRAINS magazine

We made it to Salisbury but Hamlet was too far out of the way. The North Carolina Transportation Museum at Spencer (next to Salisbury) was great. They run a Shay on weekends.

There is also the Alexander railroad that works the industries in Statesville. They have a 44 ton GE that is still active. I live south of Statesvilles and have to travel to Statesville occassionally for work. I think the 44 ton GE is parked north and west of Front St and Meachum Rd. Also, there usually are hoppers in Southern marks parked on the NS line off of Garner Bagnal Blvd. near I-77. The transportation museum is actually located in Spencer and there is a pretty decent model trian shop across the street from it.

Here is a link to the alexander railroad
