I was in Western New York again earlier this month. Sue and I attended the Civil War Reenactment weekend at the Arcade and Attica Railroad. She noticed this viewpoint while we were on the train and we chased the next train to here. I’m glad she spotted it because it was about the only shot I got that was working with the light that day! This is definitely one of my favorite images of the trip:
I agree in that at quick glance it could be a model railroad.
Of course, being the smart-a that I am, two things jump out at me: 1) the train looks to be empty, and 2) the steam exhaust is going the wrong way–it looks like either the train is backing up or it is going much slower than the prevailing wind.
Henry: Thanks! The girlfriend gets the credit for the location. It’s good to know that she’s got a photographic eye to catch the things I miss! ;-D
Sam: Thank you very much! I love rural scenes like this. It’s like taking a trip back in time!
Ed: LOL…I get enough boring on my 30 second “commute” to work everyday, so when I actually get some free time, I like to find new and interesting locations.
Quentin: Thanks! The green is definitely nice, but I’d really like to get out there and shoot this scene in autumn when it should be spectacular. Visiting Tree would be great fun, too. Alas, those are two different autumn color peaks, so I won’t be able to do both. Hopefully I can get one in, though. It’ll be nice to live out there and be able to do more stuff.
Ah ha! I was wondering if anyone was going to catch that!
Here’s what’s actually going on. The train is stopped at the field for another “battle.” If you look closely towards the back of the train, you can see some of the whitish smoke from the battle drifting up. The prevailing wind is blowing the smoke from the loco forward. And the engineer is sounding the whistle to let the reenactors know that it’s time to gather the “wounded” and take them to the “hospital” at Curriers.
[bow] Chris, the photo is of the quality of a ( C & Ives ) print. It would be a perfect shot in autumn colors . Hope you can get that shot as you said. Nice work , keep on clicking.
