Steam engine sounds

I am working on a school play, “I Never Saw Another Butterfly”, and I need some steam engine sounds that are similar to continental European 1940’s trains, such as starting, going at speed, and braking. I would like to find something that would take far too long to find using Google. Could you please help?

I have a vew I’ve collected on the web, but probably nothing you can use as most are whistles only.

Don’t give up on Googling - just learn to refine your search. There are a number of railfans who have shared their recorded sounds on the web. A little patience can pay off.

Make sure you post your request over on the MR forum - you never know…

I already posted on the MR forum, just trying to cover all my bases.

Just wanted to say that the play was a hit.

On a related note (sorry…couldn’t resist the pun), is there a recording of a CB&Q O5A/B out there someplace? I’ve heard that they were among the best whistling steam locomotives out there.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Try putting the name ARGO in your search. I think a lot of British steam trains with the high-pitched peanut vendor whistles were recorded for that label, or copy it from the sound track of British films like “Brief Encounter” or Hitchcock’s “The Lady Vanishes.”

CopCarSS, CB&Q was well-recorded by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs. Their “Sunday Only” LP was briefly reissued on a CD (Bainbridge BCD 6242). All of the cuts of 5632 on that had the original whistle, but on one fan trip they substituted a whistle that was saved from a scrapped M4A.

Greetings,

I just spent last weekend with Soo Line #1003 a 2-8-2 Mikado with a Photo Special. I have over 3 hrs worth of digital video tape. I have run-bys. plus some start-ups, might a little bit of stopping. I can quite easily pull the audio off the video recordings and save them as mpeg’s.

Contact me if you are interested kschmidt@tds.net

My suggestion would be try Pentex the maker of RR tapes. [:D][:o)][:p]
