I’ve seen a lot of photos of steam locomotives (mosly ten wheelers) with it’s rear set of drivers set an unusually far distance apart (practically under the cab) from it’s middle set of drivers. What is the purpose of this? Thanks for the help
Though early 10 wheelers in the 19th century had the drivers evenly spaced, the more tractive effort that was needed as the locomotive evolved necessitated a larger and longer firebox, and that caused the rear drivers to be spaced further back to support it. I also understand that the spacing gave the locomotive more stability at speed.

But the Tyco ten wheeler went a little overboard on the spacing!
