I have an old Bachmann 4-8-4 (HO, if that matters) that I’m retrofitting with a new NWSL can motor. In the process, I decided to completely disassemble the loco and give all the parts a good bath, because they were all very grimy and had collected a lot of dirt and crud over the years.
I know I’ll have to re-lube it when I put it all back together. My question is, what are the key lube points and which ones take oil and which ones take grease? I have a tube of Labelle 106 grease and a bottle of 108 oil.
Grease the gears, but be sparing. Use the Labelle 108 on the axle bearings and crankpins (i.e where the rods connect to the drivers). Use only a single drop of oil, otherwise you’ll be over-lubricating the engine.
Also use a single drop of oil on the bearing surfaces of the lead and trailing trucks and the tender trucks.
