Steam, Sharks, Centipedes, E's, F's GP's Alco's - Oh My

Sure jumps all over the place time wise but that’s ok. Always good to see Centipedes and Sharks in motion. Some strange passenger consists that’s for sure, likely a lot of Mail and Express and many other roads represented in some of the passenger. Even the Penn Central items looked pretty nice. At least there wasn’t any music soundtrack wrecking it all.

Note the shots of the Curve with 1361 still showing shiny flanges and treads!

My first visit to Horseshoe Curve and Altoona wasn’t until the late 70s or early 80s but that sure brought back the memories. I dragged my wife there on a trip to Virginia a couple of years ago and even she was impressed (or acted very convincingly). The change that I’ve noticed over the years is how much quieter the locomotives are. Back in the days of GP38s, SD40s and the like, they made NOISE & SMOKE. Now, the new EMDs and GEs just quietly motor up the hill. There’s nowhere near as much drama and excitement as there used to be.
