Steam to run in Wisconsin again in 2004 ??

Greetings,

I just happened to see this announcement on Trainorders.com. I am not sure how these “Photographer Specials” but it sounds interesting. Although a bit pricey.

Here is the announcement regarding Soo #1003.

The following announcement is a not-for-profit venture and this photographers’ special train movement is priced to cover operating costs only.

Its been at least 50 years since one was able to photograph a Soo Line (2-8-2) steam locomotive pulling 10-12 freight cars and Soo Line (wood cupola) caboose, while traversing the branch lines of southeastern Wisconsin. This is a true photographer’s special, coordinated by Goodheart Productions (of 3751 Grand Canyon fame), the Chicago Chapter NRHS, the Wisconsin Automotive Museum, and 1003 Operations. With enough support, the train is scheduled to run November 5-7, 2004.

The freight moves will be handled so photographers may “catch up,” from one location to another, for all run-bys. Photographers provide their own automobile transportation. Cost is $340 per person. To make the trip viable, 40 sign ups are needed. All proceeds go to help keep the 1003 running.

Wisconsin fall colors, a co-operative railroad, a handsome, geographically correct locomotive pulling a period caboose, the trip planned exclusively with photographers/videographers in mind—this is an opportunity not often replicated. Bolster your picture collections while at the same time supporting this engine.

Details of the trip, private photo locations, restaurant and motel locations, and directions will be provided after purchase. The last day to reserve a spot is September 30.

Tickets are purchased by calling 773-384-3804.

Sounds like a good idea - too far for me to go see it , this is similar to the photograher specials in the UK - where peroid loco’s run in origional locations , even being re numbered to represent bygone loco’s that are associated to a particular line or location – has proved very popular especially in the Scottish Highlands

What I don’t get is, how do they keep people getting for free what other people have paid $340 for?

And no one knows were this is. They are going to tell you after you buy the tickets? How do you keep something like that from everyone. I think people are going to notice a steam engine going down the tracks.
