Anyone know where I can locate plans / drawings for a steel mill complex? Something along the lines of a Basic Oxygen Furnace. casting mills, roller mills etc. I model 1970’s onwards.
I planned on using the Walthers kits but they are way too small - this will have to be a scratch built industry - roll-out the Plastruct and sheet styrene!
Check out Peach Creek Shops (http://www.peachcreekshops.com/) and see what they have. Their passion seems to be steel, and they have a project railroad that is a decent sized steel mill scene. They might have drawings on their site in addition to pictures.
CharlM,
In addition to Adelie’s good suggestion, if you’re not already aware of it, you might want to check into Plastruct’s Kit 30 for a steel mill fakefront. It was originally designed by Dean Freytag whose name you should use as a search terrm in the Index of Magazines to generate a list of articles about steel mills. By the way, welcome to the MR Forums !

I have built several steel mill buildings by buying sheet .040 or .060 styrene at a plastics distributor (I bought 2 30x48" pieces for about $12). I use that for the basic shape and then cover it with Evergreen metal siding.
One assumes that in HO you have at least 40’ for your rolling mill since they are 3/4 of mile long or longer. Add about 20 acres of ground for slab and coil storage. You are also going to need over 6’ of vertical clearance for the BOF as they are roughly 280-300’ tall. Don’t know what a casting mill is but a continuous caster is usually and adjunct to a BOF and will need about 200’ vertical clearance and 300’ horizontal. The BOF’s I have worked at have a footprint of roughly 500’ x 1000’ plus the conveyer belt for taking ladle additions to the storage bins. The one I am most familiar with is about 3/8 of a mile long. Are you sure you really want to do this? Best way to model a steel mill in my opinion is with pictures on a back drop and a transfer yard where cars were left by both the connecting railroad and the mill switchers for each other.

I work at the R.E.P. Lorain Ohio mill (formerly U.S.S. Lorain/Cuyhoga Works. We have a two vessel bop shop, a billet caster, and a bloom caster there. All told the size of area that these three buildongs cover is approx. 1200’ x 2200’. Reading from the replies, the heights are all in the ball park. These facilities are situated as follows, bop shop in the center, billet caster to the eastend of the bop, bloom caster to the south of the bop. I noticed no mentioned a water cooling and filtration facility for the bop, ours is directly north of the bop. The cooling/filtration facilty covers an area of approx. 175’x220’.
If you need more info, I’ll try to dig up site plans for the facilities. If you wish, contact me at randystaller@hotmail.com… Out
Thanks for all the awesome replies - I only have 12 X 4 foot to do this in - it is a section that needs to generate a lot of traffic - I guess compression is the way to go.
To save space you could build half buildings and put them against a mirror to make them seem full size. Any full buildings in the foreground will also show up in the mirror making the entire scene seem twice as big. I also have been on the Peachcreek Shops website. They have nice models but I just wi***hey made O-scale versions.
