steelmill ground cover

I HAVE A LARGE STEELMILL ON MY N-SCALE LAY OUT AND DON’T KNOW WHAT COLOR OR MATERIAL TO COVER THE AREA BETWEEN THE TRACKS OR AROUND THE BUILDINGS

how about iron ore ballast? I think Woodland Scenics makes it. It has a sort of reddi***int, and there would certainly be a buttload of it spilled around steel mills.

Ray out

Cinders with weeds poking through here and there.

Small dark gray, cinder, coke mix ballast for a base with ore red, brown, grimy black in spill and worn areas. The nastier looking…the better.

If you go to railpictures.net then search for the Union Railroad that is in Pittsburgh, there are alot of yard pics at the mills to give you examples. Dark and ugly is the color scheme that I would use.

No need to SHOUT your question it is easily answered. One of the by-products of steelmaking is slag which is used extensively in steel mills for fill, dikes and ballast. It is a porous material light gray in color that ages slightly darker.

Don’t forget the pieces of scrap metal and iron ore pellets.
