stepper motors the next step

why are these so hard to control

has enyone used them
whats the easy way to get them moving
I have a ton of the small floppy drive and cd drive steppers
looks like you have to build a computer to get them running
seems like the best way to animate the layout and maby switch turnouts
this page has some info but its a little too much for me

thanks tim I’ll check that tutorial out

smooth low speed conntrol is difficult with stepper motors. However you could always regear it if you want it for some cycliic animation.

Has anyone tried PWM’ing a standard DC motor to achieve smooth, low-speed movement?

Yes, every DCC decoder…

If you use DCC there’s nothing wrong with using a loco decoder to power a stationary effect - and with speed tables you can set it up so throttle position doesn’t matter - give the device one steady speed from speed step 1 to 127, or two distinct speeds, one in the lower half and one in the upper half, or whatever is required
