Don’t feel too bad. When I need to put an image on the forums, I have to resort to using my visual web editor to get the right coding to get the picture to show properly.
I use the A-line boxes many times for transporting rolling stock, both freight and passenger. I still keep the original boxes for all the reasons mentioned. These make for safe transporting of various equipment to run @ the club. Unpacking individual original boxes, especially Walther’s passenger can be a pain, these do make for a much easier setup. I used to transport many or my diesels in these, however the dividers tend to break off the cab shades and/or rub paint off my F-units handrails and if for some reason the box slides or shifts in the car even foam packing really doesn’t stop the “heavier” locos from jamming each other. The factory boxes do a far better job at this.
There’s a few club members that fabricate their own boxes from white foam core and white duct tape. They are sized to drop into plastic storage or heavy duty boxes. To time consuming for me, but they do work out quite well. Individual “trays” even w/ lifting tabs of the duct tape nestle into the container or stacked within drawers quite nicely. These are used more at the club to store in lockers/ drawers but by adding additional foam would also be good for any sort of transport.
I am considering building some sort of box to store my Spectrum EM1 as I really want to keep the tender/ mini plugs attached. Fabricating one of these and incorporating the vaccumn formed plastic cradle seems like it should work. The original packaging does hold the equipment to not damage all the quite “fragile” details.
The A-line boxes sure work out better to pull a long train off the layout than placing in trays to repackage at a safer location where you could take your time storing properly…
