My models in storage for 20+years. Wife says to build new layout for our son. What do I do to the locos to prepare them to run again?
I would do a general tear down of the trucks, remove all the old lube, clean everything, reassemble and lightly relube. Clean the wheels well. Make sure the pickups are clean and in good condition. Worn pickups should be replaced if possible. Check the motors to see that they still turn freely, clean the commutators if they’re assessable. A little squirt of CRC 2-26 wouldn’t hurt. Lube the shaft bearings.
Much depend on how and where they were stored. generally w/o knowing the equipment , you just need to dust off w/ soft paintbrush, clean the wheels to ensure good electrical p/u and relube. Some gearcases may need the old dried grease to be be removed as it can turn quite hard and can drastically impede performance. I’ve had older Bachman’s that the grease was hard enough to jam the drive.

Thanks For the help
They were stored in dark dry storage , most in original boxes.
do it on a case by case basic , pull them out & see if they run & go from there
