Howdy y’all.
Due to a move (Yep, I’m going back home to Sykesville), my train collection needs to be stored somewhere outside of the house.
I’ll be looking for a climate controlled storage facility to store my trains so that they are not exposed to any extreme temperatures in the undisclosed amount of time they will be locked away…And they all will be in boxes so that they subjected to as less dust as possible.
Any other sugguestions?
you could ship em here [;)]
It wouldn"t hurt to wrap your trains in bubble wrap or some other means of cushioning in order to minimize movement within the boxes that might damage small detail parts or break couples.
I spent about five years of apartment living between basements. I stored my trains in plastic storage totes (Walmart, K-Mart, Target). I could see what was in the totes and they stack and transport nicely. The totes protect the trains from dust and moisture. In addition to trains I stored my Digitrax DCC command station, boosters, powere supplies and throttles in a tote. I am back to the basement and everything works as fine as the day that I packed it.

How big is your collection? If you put it into those common cardboard boxes like computer paper comes in, how many of them would you have? Or are you planning to store layout sections that are not boxable?
I don’t know about cost, but you can rent a large bank deposit box, or two. I know of someone here locally who did that when they built a house in the country. It worked out quite well.
I would consider using plastic containers having “air-tight” lids. This way, you can minimize moisture from getting at your models (especially those with electrical components). Here in So. Cal, there is a store called the “container store” that sell all types of tupperware-like containers. I’m sure if you search thru the net or yellow pages, you’ll find something like it near you.
I keep my stuff in thier original boxes, stored in plastic crates like these:

If you have a large collection, a climate controlled, self-storage unit is probably the way to go. If it’s small, you could use a spare close, or keep them with a trusted friend.
