Storing rolling stock w/o boxes

My collection of post war Lionel rolling stock is growing a little, about 40 in total, and I’m looking for storage suggestions. Nearly none have boxes.

I’ve seen some people use wine bottle cartons which have the cardboard dividers. That seems like a good idea since they have ample depth.

I’d like to wrap the cars in some type tissue paper or something but I don’t want to harm the finish. I’ve heard that bubble wrap and even regular tissue paper can stick pulling off paint, decals, and the finish.

I wish I had enough (any) wall space to display, but I don’t. What do you folks do and what can you suggest?

The sealable tupperware-type plastic Christmas ball/decoration storage boxes come with cardboad dividers that can be modified for car size. I store cars on end, use the white gift wrapping paper, and include the silica packs to reduce trapped moisture. Works in flooded basements. No rust. No dirt. No finish degradation.

Not a bad idea for preserving the original boxes too if you have the storage space.

Don’t use tissue paper as it will stick to the engines or cars. Try thin plastic carpet pad insulation and then store the trains in boxes like ‘RockIsland52’ suggests.
