Storing & Transporting Custom Locomotives / Rollingstock and other delicate models?

Hi All,
I’ve been messing around with kitbashing HOn30 locomotives as of late, which of course end up being much larger than the original N scale donor locomotives and, as such, don’t fit in the manufacturer containers anymore. I’ve always stored and transported my locomotives using the manufacturer’s containers.
What are some solutions y’all have come up with?
Thanks!

Well, you could get foam rectangular prisms, cut out a sufficient depression for the locomotive, and nestle it in there and stick the foam in a suitable box.

This was the sort of thing Reboxx was established to solve. We’ve had threads on ‘best practices’ for boxes or other methods of storing locomotives safely; I don’t recall whether there are easily-available boxes specifically for this purpose currently available.

For HOn3 power, which is not very long, you might adapt an existing equipment case or box with foam insulation. Use a hot-wire tool to cut the ‘nests’ to size and shape, and use foam sheet to cut the beds at the bottom of the wells and the sheet for the lid.
