…As we were watching the actions of two NS trains here in west Muncie on the Frankfort line this evening…{from Mc D’s}, parking lot, the 2nd train was powered by 2 brand new appearing 6-axle engines from Kansas City Southern RR…Not a NS engine {on that train}, in sight.
Have never seen power from that RR thru here before. Not saying it hasn’t happened, I just have not seen any. Noted right away as he blew for the crossing the ditch lights didn’t blink and the 3 horn array sounded different.
Hey,
Were these the new paint scheme locos? If so,they were probably using them as UP has for xtra power…Ive heard UP will put them on there trains if they’r short of power. Or they may just have been legitamate pool power…
Danny
…Sorry, don’t know their paint scheme. New or older. These were bright orange and black. Logo on the side at some location…Can’t tell you just where now…Believe cab side.
Yep,
Thats them ! they may be pool power …You said you live along the NS right… ? Have a friend that chased 2 of them last week or the week before near Ft Worth,Tx.They were headed north. On UP auto train…There is also the possibilty they were a KCS train and they left the orig. power on them the entire trip…
Danny
Quentin,
You got lucky…that’s the new paint, the Southern Belle scheme…they also have a bunch of covered hoppers, black sides with the KCS logo, grey tops.
Nice looking locomotives.
Those are brand new KCS locomotives that NS is delivering from GE to KCS at Kansas City. Most new locomotives are delivered in service now.
Well done, Quentin.
Those are ES44AC locomotives. 4680-4709 are for KCS while 4710-4729 are for KCSdeM

…Everyone: Thanks for the comments fellows. It’s funny what one picks up on first sight…Yes, they had the yellow on them too…and I just brought Jean in here to the computer to see the pic’s Dale provided. She mentioned she didn’t notice the black and on the same sighting, I didn’t remember the bright yellow. I did look at their numbers, but didn’t make it a point to remember them.
But fellows, they were just as Dales pic’s show…Bright orange, yellow and black…and having the logo on the cab side.
They were on a train coming in from the west on the Frankfort line {NS}, and I assume they then would be heading south after crossing the {CSX diamond}, and heading south on NS’s line that heads down thru the “Rat hole”…and on south. Just guessing as I can’t see which way they go in downtown Muncie from my location in west Muncie. But one thing for sure…If they cross the diamond, they are going south.
They can head up towards Ft. Wayne…New Castle Div…or south, same line…The trains coming in to Muncie on the Frankfort line tend to be heavy with covered grain cars and recently tanks…{some corn syrup}, and more lately, covered steel coil cars too…
And we heard the dispacher talking to the first train we saw {that had dropped off some cars on the siding {that I have mentioned before as a common occurance}, the crewman {on the ground}, indicated they had a car leaking rice…Yes…leaking rice…! Dispacher, seemed a bit taken by that news but took the info and would handle it…
So…our activity at our “watching spot” was a bit interesting last evening.
The night before, a train coming through stopped and picked up two six axle engines that were in that siding {I believe dead}, and t
Sounds a lot like they were working their way “home” after being delivered to KCS at Erie, PA by G.E.
…Jim, I was a little confused as to the direction they seemed to be headed. Erie is east north east from us.
They seemed to be headed south after coming in from the west, but they really did look brand new.
Sunday 9/30/07 about 12:30pm a southbound manifest at Rockwood Tn was led by primered with black KCS letters and I`m 90% sure these 2 engines 70aces. Poneykeg said this!!!
I saw one of these about a month ago, heading east towards Indianapolis:
