Strange objects... and is this loco feeling sad?

looking around I found this…

The loco clearly has a fit of the blues… BUT what are those strange objects on the ground next to it please? They appear to have flanges wheels set at about track gauge… Are they made of boiler tube?

Any ideas anyone please?

TIA

Also, did Kato make any SD45s in Conrail colours? [Edit: should hqave said H0… but someone might like to do it in N] I’d love to make this variant.[:)]

TIA

They’re probably parts to a track grometry car/equipment. Such cars have long extensions with small wheels, with lasers or something like that. I’ve seen such pieces of equipment, don’t know if I have photos. Perhaps others may.

Not sure about the strange objects on the ground…however, Kato did make Conrail SD45’s in N scale, but they may be hard to find:

I’m not sure if they made HO Conrail SD45’s, but I think they did. They did make an undecorated version.

I remember this engine. the C&NW also had BN SD45s where they tried to match the BN green and stuck a CNW herald on the cab.

That engine CANT be feeling sad. It escaped Conrail!!!

As for the rolling gauge testers, that’s what I took them for even before reading the post about track geometry testing.

I thought the objects on the ground looked more like a jury-rigged set of wheels to carry the scrap pipe just in front of it[?]

They’re 1:1 NMRA track guages. [;)]

I don’t know what the equipment on the ground is ,but, I was stuck by the apparent light weight of the rails under the engine.

As someone else noted, they appear to be the “buggy” wheels that are used in conjunction with tampers, to determine the correct line and level.
