Strange Tankcar

Does anyone know anything about what type of tankcar this is and what is hauls? http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=563602

EUSX is a reporting mark of the ExxonMobil Corporation. That’s a four-compartment tank car–basically four tanks on one body. I’ve seen cars like that hauling lubricating oil. It could haul up to four different grades of such a commodity.

Using my picture, huh? No biggie

Just an as “exhibit a”. I wasn’t claiming any ownership.

Interesting - Looks like somebody hit “paste” a few times too many when they were drawing it in CAD…

That is one mammoth tank car.

You put it out on the net, so I don’t see how it is possible for someone not to reference it.

It only looks big.

It has a capacity of about 23,600 gallons total–divide that into four compartments, and you get nearly 6000 gallons per compartment. Because of its empty weight (all of those tanks within), it can only haul about 95 tons of payload. Its length, on the other hand, is something over 71 feet–longer than today’s typical 34,000-gallon pressure tank car, but not quite as long as a Center-Beam flat car.

I appreciated seeing the shot, no matter who took it. Glad somebody asked about it!

Well, they better not fill it up with anything that floats, then. Using water as 8.3 lb/gal, thats right at 98 tons. Is lube oil more or less dense than water? I know some crude is heavier, but at what “weight” of lubricants does it become heavier than water? Of course, to complicate matters, “Weight” of oil is more about viscousity than density, but is there some rule of thumb for that?

Could it be used for Av Gas…the 100 LL still contians lead, and probably doesnt move in a volume that would make pipelines effecient…and only weigh 6lb/ gal…

Most oil products have lower densities than water. If it was carrying aviation gasoline, it would be required to carry the appropriate placards. These cars come out here frequently. In fact I saw one tonight. It has been awhile since I have seen one at an industry, but I remember figuring that the ones that come out here carry some types of agricultural chemicals.
