They should build another roundhouse of the same design for the Strasburg as well. Seriously, the Strasburg could use a turntable.

If it wasn’t for the fact this is all a museum “static” display, I’d suggest they go see Jerry Jacobson’s roundhouse in NE Ohio and talk to his organization.

If its a 6 stall roundhouse, the computer rendition of what the building will look like is missing a few stalls

Right off, I like the modern design a lot. It will bathe collection items in lots of light. Had roundhouses survived into this era, this is no doubt what they’d look like today. The RR Museum of PA has an impressive collection and interprets it well, I believe. This will be a fine addition.

Outstanding news. This will make a great museum even better. I am glad that there are cities and towns with foresight and sense of history to do projects like this. Good luck to them, I hope to see this someday soon.

Can hardly wait to see this addition!

That’s nice but I hope they make provisions for expansion because they will need more someday and why not plan for it today.

It will be great to get some of the locomotives out of the weather…cant wait till its completed!

Thats a roundhouse?Go read The March 2010 Trains Magazine if you want to see a roundhouse

I’ve been very disturbed by the condition of some important engines in the collection “stored outside.” This is great news.

I just got my issue of Milepost, the magazine produced by the Friends of the RR Museum of PA, and it has a nice cover article on the new building. The architects took their inspiration from the Reading Company’s Cressona, PA roundhouse (now gone), which happens to be where the museum’s turntable came from. The overall shape is almost identical, with the same materials (brick, steel and glass), but with modern look that lets in lots of light and will blend in with the extisting musuem building. I think they hit a home run with this one.

The turntable will also get a complete refurbishing as part of the project.

The only thing I’m not clear about is the location of the roundhouse. Is it going to be on the same side of the turntable as the existing building, in which case the back side would abut the building, or will it be a stand-alone building on the far side of the turntable? None of the illustrations show the museum, and the background details don’t match anything in real life. (If it’s opposite from the current building, the Choo-Choo Barn complex and the old mill/antique store should behind it, not a cornfield.)

At any rate, you can see the old Reading roundhouse on the museum website: http://www.rrmuseumpa.org/whatsnew/progress/2013breakthroughs.shtml
