Stripping Athearn Genesis

Does anyone know if 91% isopropanol is a safe (for the car) and effective way to strip paint off of an Athearn Genesis car? Also, has anyone found a way to remove the lettering with damaging the paint? Thanks

Dunno. Last locomotive I stripped we used grinders and needle scalers…

You’re the ‘chemist’, but I definitely think, I’d try any ‘homebrew’ concoction on something that could be ‘sacrificed’, before I got

the project ruined. [:'(] Of Course, what Larry said, could be a ‘fall back’ option…

Try Simple Green…see your auto parts store…soak the model over night in a tupperware full of this stuff and the paint will come off with a soft toothbrush…

You have to keep in mind that I was referring to a 12 inch to the foot locomotive (RS18u)…

Larry,

Stripping is stripping - “size doesn’t matter”.

Once upon a time in galaxy far down the street I used brake fluid with decent success.

Whoops, wrong forum

Ahem . . . . . size does matter when you’re looking for a piece of Tupperware large enough to submerge a full-size locomotive in. Those suckers are hard to find[}:)]

I keep losing the lids…

Then when you do find the right lid for the right tupperware, it always seems like some darn fool has run it through the dishwasher and it’s warped.

In my youth, I didn’t run it through the dishwasher but I sometimes did let it soak too long (much to Mom’s dismay).
