Stripping lionel diesel engine frame

I purchased a used Lionel #628 engine with the goal of custom painting it. Disassembly looks pretty straightforward, but the frame is pretty dirty and oily. I need to completely strip it down and then prime and paint it. It is all metal, so I assume something like lacquer thinner would work.

What do you guys recommend? Also, is there a wiring diagram out there on the internet for these center-cab engines?

A good washing then into a shot blaster then another washing before primer works just fine if have or you know someone with one.

If that’s the Lionel center-cabber with a sheet metal frame any paint stripper for metal surfaces will do the job.

I have another question. The power truck is attached to the chassis with two fixtures that pivot around slots on either side of the truck. I note that the frame’s original yellow paint is worn away in those areas. When I repaint the frame, do I need to keep these areas free from paint for electrical continunity?

I am sure the paint could wear away again over time, but is that connection between the spring and the frame on either side making some electrical connection that would be lost if the frame’s upperside around the power truck area is completely painted over?

The areas in question need to be kept paint free. They provide the electrical ground connections for the bulb and the ‘E’ unit.

Thanks. I will mask the arch shape around the slot with tape before painting.
