Hey, I am painting my Atlas Master H16-44 and I started by using model flex paint on the cab (JUNK PAINT!) that was a mistake. I am going all Polly scale, I need to know how to strip that kind of paint. To remove the stock Atlas paint I used Rubbing Alcohol. Thanks. Mike
Hm, I’ve always had good results with modelflex. 70% rubbing alcohol will work fine.
Yeah it seemed to watery and I did mix it up good and I didnt even thin it, or anything. Polyscale gave me a nice smooth coat. More expensive but worth it to me, but hey there is no right way or wrong way. Mike
Modelflex goes on extremely thin, which is why it mak seem tooo watery.
I see, Mike
I use 90% alcohol (isopropyl that is) for striping paint mainly. Alcohol does take longer and you do have to scrub with a brush (I use old tooth brushes mostly) But I’ve never had to strip Modelflex. I did ask someone, who had, and they told me the best results would be from something with ammonia in it (possibly 409 cleaner?). I used to use Scalecoat stripper and never had problem, except for one of the Kato shells started to get brittle and cracked. I know some people use Pine sol but I can’t tell you much about how.
I used Modelflex a few times (in the mid 1990’s) and had decent to great results. The one exception was when I used the silver. It didn’t have a fine enough grind of pigment and looked more like 1960’s metal flake. Ive used polyscale mostly ever since. I think partly the reason I had good results is that I had relatively little experience with any thing else at the time and wasn’t set is my ways. The biggest problems I did have with it are that the bottles were opaque also you couldn’t get a rough guess what the color was going to be. The color charts weren’t even close to the prototype or Modelflex color. The hobby shops in my aria stopped carrying it because the said they had too many complaints and now carry Floquil, Pollyscale and some Scalecoat II in their rr dept. I liked the finnish Modelflex had. It reminded me of the semigloss Scalecoat II has. The decals could be applied without having to mix in a gloss agent or having to spray a coat of gloss for decal application purposes.
Hello NSlover,
You can use 91% Isopropyl alcohol, as mentioned.
Sorry to read that you had problems with this paint. I use both, Polly Scale and Modelflex and have enjoyed the results. With Modelflex I adjust my airbrush to spray between 27-30 psi with a medium sized needle and about 25 psi if I’m using a fine needle. Note: If air pressure is set too low, one will get the runny water droplets effect.
Don’t give up on Modelflex.[;)] Practice with it on some scrap styrene or junker freight car shells.
You probably saw the photo below, on my “Bus” thread. I sprayed the Fishbowl Transit bus pictured here with Modelflex.
Thanks ya’ll I will post pics of my diesel, i got the cab stripped I just used 70% rubbing alcohol, but it came off nice I just need to slap that on, and then learn how to do decals. Mike
