Structure window "glass"

I am working on some structures for my layout and I want to make the window glass of, let say, the “Bralick bldg”, a Walthers plastic kit with lots of large windows, appear darker or foggy or have a charcoal tint so it hides the big empty inside. Any suggestions on that folks?

If you go to the model cars section of the hobby store you can find a spray can of Testors paint called window tint, or something like that. Just spray it on one side of the clear plastic and there you have it.

Another solution is to go to the auto parts store and buy a roll of window tinting. It comes with the tinting on a roll that you can unroll and cut up and use.

One more method is to use clear plastic and shoot one side with dullcoat paint to give it a foggy look.

There’s lots of options.

You could either get a roll of window tinting film and use that to cover the clear plastic window glazing from the kit (or just use the film by itself)…

Or you could paint the interior of the building black or dark grey and use black construction paper or poster board to create “view blocks” inside the structure so when you look through the clear window glazing, all you see is black on the other side.

There is no really good or bad answer to this question. Tinting works great if you still want to see what is inside or if you are using lights. If you don’t care to see anything inside then spraying the back of the glass with opaque charcaol grey paint will work wonders. Maybe you should experiment a little with some scrap to see what method gives you the desired effect under the lighting that you have. Another option is to build interiors so you have something to look at.

In addition to tinting the glass, you might consider putting some kind of partition behind the windows. It could be dark grey, or (getting really fancy) covered with interior-scene photos cut from magazines.

I personally use clear (more or less) plastic salvaged from used overhead viewer slides. It has a bluish shade that resembles aged window glass.

Thank you, I will have some black cardboard inside so you can’t see through the building, but I think the plastic glass should be less translucid and a tint
should look less plastic.

I would shoot the interior side of the glass with some Dullcote and use the black cardboard. The combination of the two should give you a foggy, tinted appearance.
