I want to extend the walls on an N scale plastic kit using styrene. What thickness should I use?
Thats a bit like asking how long is a piece of string! I work in O scale and for small simple structures with walls a single thickness of styrene I use 40thou sheet and use 3/16"or 1/4" L angle strips for bracing. One tip I have seen is if you are using sandwich or multi layers to represent surface relief you should try to get as many layers behind as in front of the base layer to prevent warping. Also it helps to prevent warping if the structure is not a totaly enclosed box so that the fumes from the solvent have a chance to escape. I think even in N scale you should not go under 40 thou. wall thickness.
I recommend adding a 1" micrometer or a digital / dial caliper to your tool box. Find out what the thickness is of the wall you have with the micrometer or caliper, that will tell you what thickness you need to extend it.
thanx; I thought of that but decided to ask here first.
