subroadbed

Would acoustical ceiling tiles be useful as an alternative to styrofoam?

I’d probably paint them first so water won’t soak in and expand it, esp. if ballasting with water/glue mix.

Absolutely, I use it alot. I also use it to line tunnel walls after I paint it flat black. Looks good and my favorite; low cost!!

I use them as a base over the playwood, and I am using strips to form a couple of cliffsides:

As I am new to the hobby, I welcome the advice of experienced members.

This is an interesting idea. These tiles actually cost less than foam (for landscaping) or cork (for roadbed)?

Depends on where you buy them and what kind you buy, but strictly speaking, yes, they are less expensive than the Woodland Scenics and other brands styrofoam subroadbed
