Mr Bouzide. BART has always had the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to answer to about basic safety on the system. The PUC has a long history of regulating rails dating to its creation in 1878. BART tried initially tried to say PUC was unnecessary regulatory oversight. Time proved that statement wrong when BART had to explain safety lapses.

The bottom line with mass transit in this country, regardless of location, is derelict maintenance due to lack of public monetary investment. The mantra of don’t pay now, but later is engraved. This mimics 3rd world behaviour. It remains astonishing how misplaced national priorities have become.

How can you generalize about the country’s mass transit in whole, when this article only involves the D.C. Metro, and the suspected cause of the fire isn’t even mentioned ?
