[:)] I’m in the process of building my railroad in the back yard and after 10 weeks, I have an operating train, and more expansion is underway. It has occured to me I need a road. Does anyone have any suggestions for roads/roadways surfaces. I’m here in Central Florida, and the soil is pretty sandy… not condusive for G scale automobile traffic.

I have experiemented with “roll roof,” it just needsto be matted down correctly.

Yes, the rolled roofing material, much like uncut shingles, makes for excellent roadways, track crossings, and parking lots. Here you see some in front of my station plaza.
Depending on which side you use (one has texture), you can achieve different effects. I also use it under my ballast to inhibit growth of weeds.

[:)]Thanks for the replies, Captain Carrales, you suggested “matting it down correctly.” How did you do it correctly?

HI PETE
FINALY got your rail road up and running . good luck with it. ben
I use paving stones in the Ridge, & give nice paths for access too.
Take s bit of precision cutting and then you have to somehow discourage the “rolling” effect (weight usually works great). Once it is settled, it is pretty much on its own. Chestnut226 is right on on the textures. Chestnut226, do you have the roll roof in your posted picture placed there with adheisive or it the material alrealy settled. I like the look of the trackside pavement and would liek to do some work on grade crossings.
Captain, I just measured, cut, and simply inserted it in place. No glue involved here at all. The piece that rests between the rails actually sits a little lower so that there were no clearance problems for the wheel flanges or couplers.

I don’t have roads in my layout as my railway runs through rough country such as dry creek beds and jungles and i have no real plans fpr roads. a miedaeval castle yes but roads no.
By the way how do you spell meidaeval I have had several goes at it but none seem right.
