suggestions for train tours for autum leave watching...

A friend has asked about rail tours to see the leaves change in the Northeast. Does anyone know of specific tours or group tours with this theme? They are mid to late 70’s, but get around real well, and would prefer to travel with a group tour…

Thanks!

Don’t know of any specific tour groups, but for a nice weekend (depending on when the leaves turn, weather, and a host of other variables), a trip to Utica for a ride on the Adirondack might be a nice outing. I stay at the Hotel Utica (a grand old place) when I work the “Polars” - it’s nice and close to the station (possibly walkable in nice weather).

Throw in a boat cruise on the Fulton Chain and you’ve got a nice day.

If near Cumberland, Maryland, ride the Mountain Thunder trip from Cumberland to Frostburg behind 2-8-0 #734. Probably one of the best trips east of the Mississippi. (Better make reservations during the fall trips). Then go a half hour south of Cumberland to Romney,WV, and tour the Potomac Eagle behind C&O #8016, or B&O #6604, or Chessie #6240. (All beautifully restored). Best foliage in this area is usually the second weekend in October. Then if you still have time, try the Tygart Flyer out of Elkins,WV behind WESTERN MARYLAND BL-2 #82.

How about the Grand Canyon Railway’s fall foliage specials?
