Suggestions on Background builds vs. 2D on foamboard?

We are planning building placements on layout. And in one corner we have several well placed buildings and we are looking for some suggestions on what would be more eye appealing. we have some background buildings on a foam board but thats what it looks like if we place it flat on backboard. we have the foam board buildings at an angle which seems better. Would you recommend placing them this way or cutting buildings down to place flat against backboard. All suggestions welcome. Thanks for the input.

why not use both?

As you noticed, having the buildings at an angle looks ‘better’. Anything at an angle to the backdrop or front of the layout – roads, buildings, trackwork – gives the illusion of increased distance. Basically, the eye takes longer, in the same amount of space, to follow leading lines provided by those angled features. In a corner, it also softens a hard 90-degree angle of your room’s walls. Angled features can also be used to separate a layout into mini-scenes, which increases the apparent distance a train travels through.
