Hi this is my first post to this as I just discovered this site. I am trying to get a job on a railroad I’ve had several interviews with NS and one with CSX I looked at the webite for CSX and it said 110 not selected does anyone know what 110 means? does living 40-50 miles from the yard have anything to do with it?
NS is really close to me but I’ve had one machinist interview and two conductor interviews but they haven’t hired me any suggestions would really helpful
Where were you at on the CSX website when it told you that 110 not selected message? Was it an error message? Or was it a message that it figured that you would know what it meant? I wouldn’t think that it would be because of the distance that you live from the yard in either case.
Watch Canadian Pacific’s web site, they proably will be looking for conductors in Elkhart before too long. CP has system seniority on the combined Soo/Milw portion, so if you can get hired anywhere you can eventually bid to Elkhart.
I was reviewing my application status yesterday on the CSX website it said that my status was 060 interview and then I checked it this morning it said my status was 110 not selected, As I am kinda confused as they took a hair sample for drug testing and gave me this brochure that that said in two weeks I would receive an offer letter but it has only been a week when I went there were 17 guys and they wanted to hire 15 so I figured my chances were pretty good of getting the job
Okay, thanks for the clarification on where the message originated from. I would guess that 060 and 110 are computer codes that denote message type. If so, the web page designer should be shot for including those codes on the web page.
From what you’ve described, I’d have to say that it is likely that you are one of the two that did not make it.
Thanks for the insight I was hoping it meant something that way I could use it as a building block I’m not going to give up as I reapplied for a their next opening, I was told by the HR guy at NS that it usually takes 3 or 4 interviews to get hired
There are quite a few threads in this forum on how to get hired on and what the railroads are looking for. Use the search button and plan on reading for three or four days. I’ve put in my application for U.P. and what I’ve gleaned so far on getting hired is:
They prefer folks who have experience with shift work
They want folks with some type of safety experience. A good, safe work history or a position as a safety coordinator/inspector is a big plus.
College credits and degrees are a big plus as there are a lot of policies, procedures and rules to learn.
If you’re married, have you thought about how your family is going to take having you gone a lot?
Lastly, do quite a bit of research about the company you are trying to get on with. Know how the company operates; know about the yearly financial and safety statistics. Show the folks at the interview that you really have done your homework, that you know the company and know what you are getting in too.
Finally, get in shape if you aren’t already in good shape. I guess the physicals aren’t too bad, but think about walking a mile of train a couple of times a day—can you do that? Are you strong enough to hang off the ladder of a moving car in a switch yard with one hand while talking on the radio with the other hand? I figure that the better your physical conditioning, the less likely you are to get hurt.
I’ve also heard that it’s quite an unpleasant job…but this is from non-railfans. However, there is a LOT of reading. If that’s not your thing…well, you know where I’m going from here.
Indeed - a member of the forums wasn’t able to pass the part of a test for conductor which required them to hang off the side of a car with one hand for several minutes. It may sound trivial, but it’s not as easy as it sounds, either. (Wasn’t me, by the way - I’m not looking to hire on.)
Try Try and Try Agin. It took me 7 times to hire on with NS. Keep a clean criminal record, work record and safety record. Remember that most railroads only give hour and a half call time. And do exactly what they tell you to do in the session. If they say stay out side by the door be right by the door not far off beleve me it makes an impression. Hope this helps.
