Building a layout that will last about two years till college. I need some suggestions on what industries to put in and how I would track that. I’m just having modelers block.
Heres the space in question.
The closest two tracks are for liquids and one is a lead for another spur, the far one is the mainline which will curve around.
Another angle.
A closer look at the end of the mainline and where it will curve around.
Questions before i can think: theme of layout, era of layout, and I think it’s pretty obvious you model the Great northern. What scale, and how big is the space? BTW, those last 2 pictures are great. Let me guess, photobucket, right?
EDIT: some industries that pop to mind for that. Fertilizer/chemical plant, or maybe lumber dealer, small main street for a town, and a team track.
“North Shore Terminal and Transfer” - umm - only reference to that name I found through google was to your post in the teen modellers forum here, where you refer to it as your freelanced railroad.
But the North Shore Scenic Railroad is Duluth to Two Harbors in Minnesota.
It all depends on what flavor you are looking for. But the name terminal and transfer leads the thoughts to industrial/port - more Duluth style than rural North Shore style.
The obvious prototype industry people think about for that rough area would be iron ore related in some form. Maybe ore processing in some form, a small marshalling yard (just a couple of tracks) or transloading to iron ore carriers.
Or just general port flavor - warehouses, terminal grain elevators and piers (preferably up along the backdrop).
How about if you have a look at the area down by Port Terminal Drive/Arthur Avenue in Duluth for inspiration ? You probably already know that area far better than me (I am in Norway and haven’t been to Duluth for 11 years) - you can look over trackage in the area by looking up the streets e.g. on http://maps.live.com.
Yea should mentioned that it is freelanced. I work for the North Shore Scenic Railroad also. But yea, im going to look over at that trackage, but what im trying to do is not so much figure out what industrys I need, so much as how to put the trackage in coming off the mainline, and still being able to incorperate some buildings.
I’ll second the motion about painting the walls. You’ll be amazed at how much better that makes everything look, as well as reducing the dust factor. If I’ve learned anything, it’s that prepping the room, even a little bit, makes all the difference in the world when it comes to how the layout looks.
You obviously want to have the mainline curve around closest to the wall, and want to have unspecified industries between the mainline and the aisle edge of the layout. Apart from that, I don’t quite understand what you are trying to ask.
I don’t see off hand how one could draw up a suggested track plan for the industry tracks without having any clue about what industries you would have, where the industries would be and how big the various buildings would be.
Could you try to rephrase your question and make it a little clearer what you want help with?
Im trying to think about what kind of industys I could put there, and how the trackage would work. Obviously the industrys cant be bigger than the foam area.
