Another example of welfare transportation. It takes the taxpayers to fund new equipment. Equipment that could have been purchased by the individual commuter agencies had they saved their money by proper financial management. Managing money is a foreign concept to fat cat government agencies. Instead they spend it as fast as possible, the faster, the better. The mark of a socialist.
Why exactly does a foreign company need to get involved? Just go to Boeing, Ford, or any agricultural equipment manufacturer and tell them what you need built. These passenger cars can’t be more complicated than a airplane, car, or tractor. If anything, less complicated. Fewer moving parts. But this is where politics and socialism gets involved and both of those can’t have any of those anti-socialist companies involved, especially Boeing and Ford.
You would think that with all these orders from all over America that someone would have the gumption to start an AMERICAN passenger car company!!
Jeffrey: Boeing and Ford would certainly be capable of taking on this venture. The question was whether they thought it made sense for them. Some companies are very diversified ( like GE and Koch), while other companies feel it is in their best interest to stay focused ( like Ford and Boeing ). They certainly weren’t excluded from bidding.
Wow! Are we supposed to be elated because only $352,276,000 of the $551 million slated for bi-level cars is being committed ? Well, I’m not thrilled !
130 bi-level cars is not really that high of volume and over $2.7 million per unit to me is not a great price.
What about the all too common cost over-runs? First cars won’t be delivered for three years yet? And the last cars to be finished in another three years? Sounds more like a political three year stimulus plan to me.
California and some other states are on the brink of bankruptcy and the federal government debt is over $16 trillion and the Federal Reserve keeps printing more money.
This is insane!!! Will it ever STOP?
Welfare transportation? Are you talking about the interstates?
Remember Pearl Harbor!
Jeffrey: Boeing Vertol thought that building streetcars would be a snap compared to building helicopters. They were wrong and the Boeing streetcars had a lot of problems in San Francisco and Boston. I would never recommend anyone buy a railcar built by Boeing!
Also, these cars are not going to be used on commuter railroads. They’re going to be used on state funded Amtrak services. Here in California we have the Capitol Corridor and the San Joaquins. They’ll be used on trains like the Saluki in Illinois. This is mentioned in the article.
