Lest new modelers be scared off by the list price of this beautiful HO locomotive, I’d add that you don’t have to spend that kind of money to enjoy model railroading. The only articulated locomotive on my roster is a mostly plastic Rivarossi 4-6-6-4 probably made in the 1970’s. The maker added a few of its features (such as a tender actually based on ones used behind Nickel Plate 2-8-4’s) to an existing model of a Union Pacific Challenger to suggest a Delaware & Hudson loco, but it’s not a replica of a D&H engine. However, I bought it used a couple of years ago for $50.
It puts start up railroad fans out of price range , all be it a fine model . Being a kitbasher I am probably biased , but I am with the $50.00 used gang .
For the same fifty bucks I bought a Bowser Challenger that was so ancient it actually had a carved wooden tender. The wood was mounted on a cast metal bottom plate to convey current. The mechanism is smooth, simple and rugged and, after a few broken castings were replaced, she’s almost ready for the road. The restoration was 'way more fun than buying new off the shelf!
As an avid NP modeler, I have had the NP Challenger on my list for some time, but since the NP Challengers were larger than the
UP Challengers only brass models were available. I even purchased a Bowser cast metal UP Challenger hoping to modify it to look more like a NP Challenger, but gave up. NP brass models were comparitivly pricey until Sunset came out with the NP Z-6 Challenger. I was so impressed with the Sunset Z-6 that I purchased the Z-8 before any tests were available. Now I have two NP Callengers with sound for the price of one from other manufactures. Just wish I had paid closer attention when Sunset released thier NP A-4 locomotive.

that I bought four of them and two of the Z-6s.
Just what the NP or SP&S modeler needs. Seriously, this is a fine model that passes several tests of accuracy. I presume that Sunset will be offering a “stealth” version for a few bucks less.
This is an interesting model of one of my favorite steam engines. One thing missing from the article, however, is a description of the model’s drive train system, i.e. whether the articulation is true to prototype or instead uses the “streetcar” system in which both engine/driver asssemblies pivot relative to the boiler. This latter style negates my ever purchasing such a model. If you have ever witnessed the real thing negotiate its way through a set of S curves you would understand my feelings. I have an old PFM model of a DR&G 2-8-8-4 that runs great on my layout and it is awesum in this effect.
this loco is for brass model an high end runners …were can you buy a large steam engine made of all brass with QSI titan sound it is a great value.you can buy other mfg brass engines of this model that are from app. 300.00 to 1000. more depending on the MFG.add the cost of decoder an install unless you can do it yourself its a great buy.
The sunset models articulate like the prototype. These are such a better value than paying $2400.00 for a division point model, then another $350.00 to add DCC and sound.
I am pleased that Sunset Models decided to produce an all Brass engine n p… z6 . I am sure it will find a place on many a model railroad for long service there. Brass locos cant be beat for longevity…
this is information on drive train of loco ,it only articulates on front engine …rear is as prototype engine hence model is designed for 30" radius.like older brass engines.
