Two-tracking was taking place in Southern California between Ontario and Fontana. It is unknown if it is still taking place or finished, as the TRAINS forum has been rather chaotic in the last several months, and I have not been to said area in many weeks.
There are more of them than us!
Years ago, everybody and his uncle worked for the railroad. And, because of that, railroads had political clout and were feared. Now, nobody (well, very few) are employed by railroads, and railroads have little political cloud! Thus, two tracking is questionable because of the presence of Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR). However, the problem for PSR is the rath of the American people! Eventually, there will be legislation limiting train lengths. The people don’t like four mile long trains. UP sees the writing on the wall, and in the next several years will two track the remainder of the Sunset Route in west Arizona and necessary parts of west Texas. Apparently, Southern California almost doesn’t exist, as two-tracking previously needed to be finished there too, but there is no word for that area, except the current Ontario-Fontana area!
Ontario-Fontana, Calif.
It is unknown the status of two-tracking in the Ontario-Fontana area. At Cherry Ave., from a past visit, there is a three-track signal bridge (westside, facing west for eastbounds) and three masts for westbounds (facing east), with NO accompanying track. It is believed the switches there will be 30 M.P.H.
The Cherry Ave. bridge is a rather new one over the Sunset Route tracks and I-10 Freeway. Previously, it had an east side sidewalk but the new arrangement has a west side sidewalk.
