Superliners

Just read an old article on superliners from1982, these innovations were(are) terrific, lots of room, diversified coaches, food, viewing, sleeping, eating, socializing, what a super concept, Pardon me, but are these cars still in existance? are they on present day trains? the short article said 284 were built. For any sane reason why is there not a trans-continental train made up of these cars, The U.S. must quickly get back in the business of hauling humans in comfort rather than coal, travelled on a plane recently?? treated like cattle. anyone tell me where these cars are now or if they are in service? I’ve been out of the loop for a while.

Yes

Empire Builder, Cal Zephyr, SW Chief, Capitol Limited, City of NO, Texas Eagle, Coast Starlight, Auto Train. (Did I miss anything)?

Quite a few have been scrapped due to wrecks-I think about a dozen others are being repaired with extra Federal funds appropriated this year.

Ummm…Every major long distance Amtrak train operating west of Chicago (as well as the Capitol Limited from Chicago to Washington, DC) currently operates with Superliners.

Here…see for yourself: http://www.amtrak.com

Unfortunately, the ATSF El Capitan sets that spawned the superliners have moved on and no longer are Amtrak’s.

They do not operate east of Chicago, except for the Capitol Limited, because of overhead clearances.
