A temporary bridge would mean lots and lots of extra expense and still require a service shutdown to connect the temporary track and another to disconnect the temporary track.
Like Don, I think a weekend shutdown for a bridge replacement is pretty awesome for keeping the impact on passengers minimal.
Isn’t there some way service could be maintiained. I really don’t think it’s good to shut everything down like that. What would be good is some kind of temporary bridge to keep things moving while other work’s going on.
I’m thinking just the opposite. Keeping the outage down to just a weekend is pretty good planning!

“The project won’t be complete until early next year” certainly sounds like there could be more service disruptions than just this weekend. The lack of detail that plagues many of these articles may be popping up in this one.

Yes there are temporary bridges. But, this is the Peoples Republic of California. Installing a temporary requires a stack of permits the size of the Sears Tower, environmental studies for at least 50 years to make sure no blue tongued purple spotted bird snakes are affected, and financial kickbacks at all levels of government to grease the wheels. In other words, it is easier for BNSF to just shut it down. Apparently what freight is affected will just have to go by truck or wait until everything is completed. Most likely a bus fleet will show up at the passenger stations, as always happens in these situations.
It’s a major double-tracking project. There have been, and will continue to be, service disruptions of various types. Get used to it and get over it.
Knowing the Goose; he would prefer the passenger business to go to Greyhound, Mega-bus, or some other privately owned motor carrier.
Cant we just all get along.
More double track equals more trains, more frequency, and more revenue!
