Surfin' the New TRAINS.COM website

At first glance - it looks Great! [tup] … though I’m having trouble searching old forum threads and can’t seem to find the “My Forum” links. [:(]

… here’s my first post using the new interface.

Brad from MN

I disagree. There is a major lack of advertising on this new website. And I can’t even find a button to push to subscribe to any Kalmbach magazines. And how about that wonderful process of unlocking your screen name. I thought senility had hit me when I tried 5 times to enter my old password. I finally gave up and asked for them to send it to me. What I got sure wasn’t my old password. It did let me in and now I have to re-enter my old password. Oh yeah…all the pretty graphics slows down the website big time. And I’m on high speed DSL. I hate to think what a dialup member is experiencing.

I need some binoculars !!

I too am having problem searching. The way I got here was to enter search argument in search community (lower right on screen); get error search not found; remove search argument and leave groupid:5 which was supplied by formum web page.

Please bring back old search box and "My Forum " links.

The Chief’s not going to like the print size

I just got back from Wallyworld. Bought a gigantic magnifying glass to mount in front of the screen. They must think all us old geezers have teenage eyes!!!

I found the place to make the printing larger (in Update Profile at the right). I set it to largest, but nothing has changed. I’ll check back in 15 minutes and see if it took effect.

I still haven’t found the links to my old forum threads. Anyone else find them yet?

Yeah - and search engine brings back 0 matches to anything I type in the search box. Hmmm???

I don’t see any difference in the font size.

There is a place in windows where you can increase the font size if you have trouble reading the smaller font.

Earl

You can increase the font size on your computer by

  1. Opening “Control Panel”

  2. Double click on the “Display” icon.

  3. The Display Properties window should now be open on your PC.

  4. Click on the “Appearance” tab

  5. Then select a font size suitable to you

  6. Click “OK” to close the Display Properties window

On WinXP I’m given the font sizes of NORMAL, LARGE and EXTRA LARGE.

I don’t know if this is the long term fix, but it should take the strain off your eyes until something can be done.

Font size sure looks smaller to me. And I already tried the Windows adjustment. It has no effect on this website. You adjust it in Windows Explorer under View/Text Size/Smallest-to-largest. Also the adjustment for font size in the User Profile doesn’t seem to change anyhting either. I still haven’t figured out why we have screen names and then they put our real names in large black letters in the Welcome back box. [(-D]

If you have a scroll wheel on your mouse you can hold down the control key and turn the scroll wheel.

This will enlarge or decrease the whole page as well as the type.

That’s no fix either. It just affects normal Windows apps. Not the web browser.

We have a BINGO!!! [:D] This fix actually works!!! [tup]

Hold on…I seem to be having problems with posts. Things are getting jumbled together.

I like Joe’s signature line: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
CTT should have taken that advice. I notice that every time a CTT mod or staff member posts about the new forum, they immediately lock the thread. I wonder why? Too bad all these new gizmos on here don’t also include a polling option. I’d sure like to take a poll on whether people like this new stuff or not. My biggest gripes are:

  1. Tiny font. No way to adjust it effectively. We may all end up posting in bold just to be able to read the posts!!!
  2. Lag times have increased substantially. Probably due to all the advertising. Is Kalmbach saying they need all this advertising dollars because they aren’t making enough profits off the magazine subscriptions and merchandise???
  3. E-mail notifications are excessive. I don’t need to be notified of the posts I make. That didn’t happen with the old forum.
  4. All my subscriptions seem to have vanished. That is a MAJOR loss for me. I had a lot of valuable and informative threads bookmarked for future reference. Especially wiring and electrical info.

Yep, I liked the OLD way better. I DO NOT LIKE THIS FONT!!! (yes i’m shouting). At least if we are stuck with this font, make it adjustable in size! I’m gonna have to use bold just so I can see what i’m typing!

Well now that that’s done with, the layout isn’t too bad-- I don’t even really notice the ads–

I hate it! It’s to cluttered with crap like ads, etc, what a JOKE! What next? Pop-ups?

Look at this! At the top of each topic page on the right are a couple of ads, and as you scrool down the page, no ads. And the topic/post block stays the same size. Look at all the wasted space on the right. What a Joke! As well as some of the other stuff people have posted. I may not be comming around here much anymore the way this is set up. In this space age days of techno stuff, you’d think they could have given us a sneak peek and critiqued what they were going to dump on us. I guess I grew up in the wrong age, at least I have some common sense which is alot more than I can say for others.

I don’t see any way to know which topics have been updated since I read them. The old forum changed the color of the title of the topic. None of the “More Options” stuff seems to work.

If the little pencil or star to the left of the Subject is RED you have not read it, if YELLOWyou have. Hope that helps.

Well, when I was on the forum before supper, all the pencils were yellow, no matter what I did. After supper, I got on again and, sure enough, some of them were red, but not particularly corresponding to those I had read. Then I tried the “Mark all read” button, which turned them all yellow again. I thought it meant “Mark all the topics that I have read”. It seems to mean “Mark all the topics as though I have read them”. I read one, then got off and back on. Still yellow. I don’t see any way that this red-yellow helps me. I would hate to have to re-read a bunch of old topics just to find whether there are any new posts, every time I get on the forum.
