I just purchased a SP sw1500 for my western themed layout. Now I need info on the engine. When EMD made them and some other history as well. Where do I go? Who’s got the best resources out there. thanks guys.
ghostbear you might wanna try a magazine index search at the top of the page or do a google search

The EMD SW1500 was the first of EMD’s switching locos
to be equipped with the 12 cylinder 645 engine. It was
introduced in 1966-the same time as the other 645 equipped
locos. They were produced up to 1974, when it was superseded
by the MP15. Hope this is helpful.
Additionally, you can still find them in operation today.
According to a roster I got from Southern Pacific back in 1991 (it is dated August 1990) the following years are when SP and SSW SW1500s were built.
Bought:
SP 2450-2480 1967
SSW 2481-2492 1967
SP 2493-2510 1968
SSW 2511-2522 1969
SP 2523-2552 1969
SP 2553-2578 1970
SSW 2579-2582 1970
SSW 2583-2590 1971
SP 2591-2612 1971
Leased
SP 2613-2679 1972
SP 2680-2689 1973
SP, or SSW, 2578 was off of the roster by August 1990, I am guessing it was SP.
I do not know what type of history you are looking for. For information on SP locomotives, click on the link in my “signature”.
boy you can’t get a much more detailed answer than that !
i highly recommend http://www.railroadbooks.biz/ if you’re looking for info on any railroad
thanks all. thats exactly what I needed. Yeah, they are still going. I was up at EL Mirage in Phoenix picking up a car from the BNSF yard. I managed to watch a blue one do some car switching right in front of my fiance and I. So, we decided to go and get one. Now I will add it to the lay out . Thanks again.
Don’t forget to check the all-important Espee modeling tool: espee.railfan.net
Here’s the direct link to their SW1500 page:
yeah, I just finished grabbing the jpeg and the info. THANKS SOO MUCH! You guys rock. But one thing I noticed…NOW I NEED THOSE DARN window shades! My athern didnt come with any!!! Also, I realized last night that my paints are surely lacking. Ive got the wrong grey and yellow but no brass or white. Gotta go shopping again. Also, figured Id get some new brushes while I was at it. I like the model, just the directions and assembly is a little wierd. Anyhows…I really am liking this switcher.
