Kansas City area folks and those around the area… This weekend there’s the Greater Kansas City Model Railroad Expo at Union Station. It happens both Saturday 10/13 and Sunday 10/14. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. I went to this last year and found some nice bargains in old HO-scale trains. And if you’ve not seen it, the G-scale and S-scale holiday display layout is up and running now in the Union Station Grand Hall. This big layout covers nearly half of the station’s large Grand Hall and is really something to see. Downstairs in the theatre district they also have operating HO- and N-scale layouts. The layouts are free to view and worth a trip to see themselves. There’s also a newer Harvey House restaurant open at Union Station to have lunch. Check It Out! Union Station is located at 30 W. Pershing on the south side of downtown Kansas City.
I went to this event last year, and it was awesome! There’s also great railfanning just north of Union Station, where several trains an hour is a slow day.
Last year, UP’s Challenger 3985 was there (along with a full compliment of streamliners), along with DD40X 693 (which doesn’t look as big in person as you’d think, sitting next to modern motive power and a Challenger!). Sorry, no pictures I don’t know if UP has anything planned for this year’s event.
edit: although the listings mention a $7 admission fee, last year that was only to gain entrance to the vendor’s area; all of the layouts were out in the open, for free
