Swap meets

Where would I find where there are swap meets in Minnesota? The only 1 I can find is the 1 at the fair grounds. Also, thinking of tearing down my current layout, 6x14, and build a around the walls design. Any ideas?

[#welcome] to the Forums. This particular forum is for discussing 1:1 scale railroads. Depending on which scale you model in, you may find more help on the ‘Classic Toy Trains’ forum (S & O scales) or the ‘Model Railroader’ forums (HO, N, Z, TT, etc.)

Hope this helps,

What???

When I replied to this post it was in the ‘Trains Magazine’ General Discussion forums - looks like it’s been moved.

TWB - Hello, I’m from the Burnsville, MN area. I suggest you checkout www.newportclub.us, or checkout www.hennepinoverland.org The Newport Club has several “Flea Markets” during the year, the next one will be on April 17th, 2010 at Woodbury High School. They have a lot of used goods as well as vendors who sell new stuff too. I have found some really good deals there on used/new stuff. It’s always fun even if you don’t buy anything (admission is only $5.00). My latest purchase was an Atlas RS-3, which I bought for $45.00!

The Hennepin Overland Club has a REALLY great layout that you can visit (612-276-9034) and they are open for visits on Sat. & Sun from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Check 'em out!!!

Regards, Jimmy

Me too. WHAT!!!

Welcome to the forums!

To find things going on in your area go the the top of this page and find Resources, then Coming Events. There you can go to your state or one close by to see what is going on. You can also go to Model RR Groups and find groups in your area.

Tearing out layouts seems quite common. Before tearing yours down I would suggest you look over some layout designs and find something you like. Around the walls is popular as it is somewhat out of the way unless you put a penninsula in the middle of the room. Get a benchwork foot print you like and a layout design started to go on it. Then you can start removal of the old layout and have an idea what is reuseable. This way you can keep running trains until you know where you are going. If you are a subscriber, there are many footprints and plans available in the Track Plan Database, under Subscriber Extras.

Goos luck,

The Thousand Lakes Region of the NMRA has an events web page. It covers Minnesota.

Hi!

I guess the obvious answer to your question about tearing down your layout, is what do you want? Do you like to “railfan” your layout, or do you prefer switching cars? In general an island type, continuous loop layout lends itself to watching trains, while an around the walls layout is better if you want to do a lot of switching.

Of course, as with everything in model railroading, these aren’t “hard and fast” rules and there are exceptions.

TWB,

Take this link below and select Minnesota and how many months ahead and it will list all the events in Minnesota you want to go to.
