Is Europe trying to crash one a week to prove how crash unworthy their ultra-light trains really are? Keep in mind, these are the same trains the high speed rail foamers want to bring to this country because we Americans are too stupid to build light weight vehicles. Pullman and others of the old school had the correct idea, which was about the same as Detroit auto industry in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Built them based on army tank technology. You can see this today in any state. The physically stronger vehicle always survives a crash much better than the weaker. Why do you think the safety people are spending so much time on testing a stronger tank car? If weaker was better, build it out of the same material as a soda can and let the eco-terrorists glorify the weight savings.
Physics…
…something to do with laxatives…enemas… for the brain of a specific letter writer from Illinois.
Physics…If every vehicle weighed the same, shape, velocity and trajectory would then affect survivability. But, it’s sure that if a Kenworth, a fully loaded 18-wheeler hits a Harley Hog…head-on…were the Harley built like an army tank… …weight…mass times velocity…the bike is a flyspeck on the tarmac.
Segregate the light-weight “fast” thru “ultra fast trains.” That’ll do it.
The above mentioned Illinois letter writer said"The physically stronger vehicle always survives…"
He did. yes…he did…
It’s weight; mass times velocity…not being built like a combat tracked vehicle…or wheeled…
How does this article prove lightweight trains are unsafe?
Not quite correct. SBB is certainly the most important operator, but there are countless others - ranging from tiny (a few miles) regionals to quite important pikes like transalpine BLS. And not to forget the Rhaetian Railways, a very spectatular and very busy 240-mile network.
