Do railroads still use switch keys like the past. I kinda find it odd that they sell them on Ebay.
I know people like to collect them but think in todays world that might not be too good.
Just curious…

Yes…although, today’s keys are very different from the ones that typically show up on E-bay. When you’re fired, you’re suppose to turn the keys back in.
I would be very wary of having said keys in your possession when near railroad property. Railroad Police tend to ask uncomfortable questions, if non-railroaders, have current railroad keys in thier possession.

Just like it’s not a good idea to have a can or two of spray paint in your possession when taking pictures of a car with graffiti on it.
The Adlake switch lock and key like the one on ebay below were replaced by modern style pad locks in the mid-late 1980’s.

The Adlake locks/keys have been obsolete on railroads for over 20 years so this is why you see them for sale on ebay.
Those switch locks are still in service on CN and other lines on non main track switches and derails, they have replaced them on main line switches with the Sargent and Greenleaf high security locks.
