I would like to put some Tortoise throws in. Do you use fake switch stands with these or working ones? Can you have it so it works both with the Tortoise and the manual throws? Looking at the Walthers site they have twelve switch stands listed. Are all these working ground throws, or are some for static purposes only. As always thanks for your guidance.[C):-)]
If you are using tortoise switch machines, why would you use a ground throw at the same time? I think that it would be an "ever or situation. I use tortoise switch machines in my new layout. They are wired to a control panel with red and green LED’s. I plan to model switch stands when I get to the scenary part. In my previous layouts, I used a combinations of ground throws and NJ International switch machines. Craig
One thing I’ve done for local control is wire a tactile pushbutton next to the switch. The button is connected to the Tortoise via a DS64. This gives me local control, as well on the throttle with DCC commands.
I’ve used Tortoises or Switchmaster for my motor driven turnouts. I’ve used Details West switch stands for the manually operated turnouts. The switch stands have a movable target.
But at my Third Street District I had a few turnouts with Switchmaster and Details West.
Scale-sized dummy switch stands are “mandatory” details for the right-of-way. There are some people, however, who are clever enough to slave those switch stands so they change indication as to which way the switch is routed.
My lack of experience in this area is shining through. The last powered turnout I used was in the early 1960s. I have 30 plus turnouts on my layout with only three that I have to walk around part of the layout to get to. I was wanting to be able to control these three from two different spots. One from where I will normally be in the room and also if I was standing on the other side next to the turnouts in question. I should be able to wire the same turnout with two separate control toggles/buttons. By the sounds of it I think it is dummy switch stands on the tortoise controlled turnouts. When I get really motivated I’ll attempt the changing signals.
I also like gpa’s solution as it would be ideal in this situation. Thanks
