Switch tower repair

Got enough parts to build a 445 switch tower but don’t know what to use for the string that lets the man slide down the stairs. Seems like fishing line would be to stiff to slide through the wall and sewing thread to light to last long.I plan on using insulated track to run it so it will get a lot of use. None of my hobby shops have the right string so any ideas? Thanks

Try some lighter weight fish line like 10 or 12 pound test.

I would try to find some sort of slightly heavier than standard thread.

For some modern Lionel switch tower examples, I always thought the thread was smoother through the eyelet in the side of the building than fishing line was. (Both thread and some sort of fishing line type material was used in the early 90’s for the original burning switch tower)

Also keep in mind, the the bend in the bracket the man rides on can influence how smooth the action is. (meaning the bend that causes it to ride the edge of the stairway)

Maybe some sort of dental floss? The wax on the floss might help it ride through the eyelet more easily.

Found some embrodery thread at Jo-Ann fabrics that works great. Before I tied it in I took a little paste wax on my fingers and pulled it through. Slides real well. Thanks

Carpet thread works for many Lionel items like the switch tower and the line on the crane car. It is also quite usefull around the house. Get a large set of needles that will allow you to thread it through any small openings.
