My proposed track plan includes a switchback track. It is a small HO switching layout. My question is this-once switching duties are complete could the end of the track be used for diesel service while waiting for next assignment? I know this is probably unusual but it is just a thought. Thanks Bob
I don’t see why not. Most small, shortline operations did what ever was needed as cheaply as possible. One of the charming characteristics of these lines is a low-cost home-grown solution.
Enjoy

I would say yes. Last week we (my family) went to Steamtown USA in Scranton Pa to celebrate my son’s 6th birthday. Outside of the Mall at Steamtown there is a single track running through the parking lot, which had four diesels taking on fuel from a small fuel truck. With that setup, you can refuel just about anywhere.
Thanks for the replies guys. I have a scratchbuilt fuel crane and sand tower that will fit just right at the end of the switchback. Thanks Bob
On the Western Maryland’s Chaffee Branch, the engine house was located at the end of the switchback at Vindex.

Unfortunately, my switchback wasn’t long enough to function like this, so I had to cheat a little…

But yeah, nothing wrong with the concept.

Thanks Lee. Like your pics. Had a HO engine house that I kitbashed but when I was designing my layout I didn’t see a place for it at the time so I turned it into something else. Probably won’t actually need one as long as I have room for sand tower and fuel facility. Thanks again-Bob
