Switches

Being new to MRR (HO) and being poor I’m wondering if using ‘manual’ switches in my yard would be a wise move and if so…can someone recommend a good one to use?

Are you asking about ground throws or turnouts?

Rich

If you mean switches (what we commonly call turnouts) that don’t have a mechanical activation device, then making your own is the cheapest solution by far. Unfortunately, getting to the point where you can craft your own isn’t going to be so cheap unless someone shows you how to do it and spots you some materials, or unless you can lift some at a garage sale. Otherwise, used if you can get some that work reliably and look decent.

If you elect to purchase, any of the Atlas swtches should be good, or Micro Engineering, or Peco, or Walther’s/Shinohara. Again, good used ones would be best, but if you have to get them new, you’ll have to surf for deals online.

As you are new to the hobby, my recommendation would be the Atlas snap switch, relatively inexpensive and the ability to throw the switch manually is built into the unit . the manual switch goes for about $9.50, an automatic (electric) version of the snap switch goes for about $14. there are a lot of other options but for the beginner this should do the trick.I got the prices from NHS hobbies on line.

Thanks for the help,

Dale

I have some Tortoise (electrical-remote) turnout controls and also three manual controls purchased from Fast Tracks called Bullfrog Manual Turnout Controls that go for about $6/each. I really enjoy the manual controls and when or if the Tortoise units quit working they will be replaced with a manual control. It’s all a matter of personal preference and you may want to consider trying different kinds to see what you like best before investing a lot of time and money in just one type.

Where is the OP?

We really don’t know quite what he is asking about, turnouts or ground throws.

Patience

Forum addicts (like you or me or a bunch of other regular posters) tends to scan the forum every day, maybe even several times a day.

Many new forum participants only stop by once every few days or even once a week, not realizing how fast the forum moves sometimes.

The best low cost option I know of for HO track is Atlas Code 100.

While snap switches, which include the manual switch control are cheaper, I would use their #4 and add an Atlas manual switch machine. The Snap Switches are curved through the diverging leg and for a yard I think the #4’s would look better.

Good luck

LION has NEVER know a Tortoise to “quit working”, and him has some that are more than 25 years old and have seen service on 3 or 4 layouts (depending on how you count “layouts”)

I would forget about the Atlas Snap turnouts (they’re crap) and go with the Custom Line turnouts and use Caboose Industries manual ground throws. They’re cheap (about $2.00 each), easy to install, and very dependable.

I would have to say peco, they are sprung swiches.

I really like manual operation of turnouts. After trying several different methods and manufacturers, I’ve come to the conclusion that I am definitely a Peco turnout lover. They have sprung points, that are operated by pushing the points with your finger. They work great and are very robust.
