That is about the only major Alpine pass I haven’t crossed by train. I’ve done the Brenner once and the Simplon twice, but missed the Gottard. Maybe next time.
No question the passenger services have been hamstrung by this closure, but as you said, why no mention? In the daylight hours there are many more passenger trains than freights, so yeah, this is a big deal. Maybe only Hupac did a press release?
Interesting that there was no mention of the dozens of passenger trains that also had to be rerouted. Zurich to Milan is one of the key Trans-Alpine routes linking Northern Europe to Italy. Passenger trains were also re-routed to the Lotschberg/Simplon route which many north-south trains normally take adding to the congestion.
Press release indicated normal passenger traffic at 4,000 per day on this route. Been there and rode this route. It is especially nice on the southern end with Northern Italy lakes…
