Sycamore Springs Hotel

Anybody have any experience with the Sycamore Springs Hotel kit by Nick & Nora?..I need some help aligning the roof formers? thanks

[:-^]

Hi Jerryl,

Why don’t you start with a call to Nick and Nora… Go to the head of the horse instead of the tail. Lol.

Johnboy out…

Thanks for your “Help” I have done that.

Can’t seem to find anyone that has assembled this kit. It’s a good looking structure with a unique design.

Probably are not getting any response because no one knows what you are talking about… I for one don’t know, for I never heard of it,let alone who the people are… Maybe some more info would help, your description is rather vague…

Cheers,

Frank

Really don’t know how else to describe it. It is the Sycamore Springs Hotel Kit by Nick & Nora. If you have never heard of it , I guess you can’t help me. You could Google it. It is really a good looking background flat HO laser kit. I did contact them with a question & they will get back to me…meanwhile I was hoping someone would have some experience with the kit. jerry

Jerry,

Did not mean to offend,but HO,backround flat,laser kit,is a lot more info…

Cheers,

Frank

NO OFFENSE TAKEN…jerry

Search the net and you will often find.

If this reply is for me…This is where I ordered it from & have contacted them. They don’t seem to know why it’s so far off, but are recutting & will send a replacement… Can’t figure what I could have done wrong, it’s laser cut & can only go together one way, but like I said, it is a unique/ distinctive kit. Check out the picture on their site…jerry

It’s a reply to everyone, who like me, had never heard of the kit and the maker.

However, If you had included the link in your original post, you might hace gotten more productive answers, since the responders could then see a photo of the completed model, and get sone idea of what you needed to do.

You would, at least, have informed us about a very nice looking and likely very useful to many line of craftsman kits

I really didn’t think any more description was necessary at the time because I thought if you had any experience with the kit you would know what I was referring to. If you had to ask what it was you wouldn’t have any answers for me & I wouldn’t want to waste your time.

Very interesting that I can’t find anyone on the sites that I’ve tried so far that has assembled the kit. It’s been out since Jan. I’m just about done except for the roof & as you can see on their site, the roof is complex. I’m sure this will be resolved & I will pass on anything I find out in case anyone on this forum would like to add this to their collection…Thanks All. jerry

That’s a nice looking building and a good price too. I haven’t done any laser cut wood kits yet; is this kit simple enough for a first craftsman type kit? I saw your post on the other forum from 945am today. Those guys are usually good about answering questions. I go there to look at the craftsman challenge page.

I would not recommend this kit as a first time laser kit. I have done a few & many scratch builds. To me the instructions are a bit sketchy. There are parts that are not mentioned in the instructions so you have to figure where they go. I decided to put vertical dividers in the top sashes & decided to use after market porch railing instead of building it from .020 x .020 wood strips. May also substitute styrene for the porch roof. Waiting to see if the replacement roof will fit or if I have to modify the one I have. There are over 40 windows that you have to cut upper & lower glazing for & add some kind of window treatment. Whatever, it will be a great model when finished. jerry

Jerry,

Sorry I didn’t reply to your question sooner, but yes, I did build this kit and it was a horror show for me. The instructions were more than a bit sketchy for me. To me they were the worst I have ever come across. The little curved roof parts did not fit, plus one of them was missing, and I made new one from card stock by tracing one from the other tower. Forget the porch railing, I used ready made railings from Thichy Group. Getting back to the roof. When I completed the roof it didn’t line up. I had to add more card stock to the back side of the roof so I can get right overhang. I have built many craftsman kits from almost every manufacture out there with no problems what so ever. I called Nick & Nora, emailed them with no reply. So , sorry to say I will never buy another kit from them.

I was also missing a part of the roof & after I contacted them thru thier web site I had a replacement in 3 days + a newspaper & cardboard box sheet. They have answered my inquiry about the roof & they will be recutting & send me one. I used a grandt line railing. I set my homemade chopper stop & cut both the railing sections & the headers to make sure everything remained parallel & square, it worked out well. Didn’t even try the .020 x .020 railing assembly. Seems to me with that many glue points you would have a lot of warpage or at least fill in the spaces between the posts. The roof seems to be the only real problem. Seems I will have to cut the center section out, shorten it & re attach it about 1/2" toward the front & cut about 3/8" from the back of the tower roofs which will involve moving the end former pc. Probably sounds tougher than it will be.

Question. Did you make your roof overhang the trim boards or did your roof end inside the trim as shown on the picture?&n

Yes, I made my roof over hang the trim boards. that is why I added more card stock to the back side of the roof.

I also cut the roof in half and added about 1/4" of card stock in the middle so each tower would have the same amount of overhang on each side, and the front.

Waiting on the new roof, but still have to hang the shades & maybe some draperies. Also used styrene for the foundation…easier to get a good smooth concrete look. If they get the roof situation ironed out & maybe include a Grandt Line railing, it would be a good kit for the advanced builder…jerry
