Anyone going this weekend? Can’t wait!
YEp. If you mean at the fairgrounds. for those wondering and wanting more info:
Anyone going look for me at the Syracuse Model RR Club display in the main building. We are pretty much in the middle of the building with a small set of modules we do clinics on for scenery and JMRI stuff. Ask for Tim. I hope to meet some of you and hopefully you will not miss me when I “wander” off to shop [:-^]
I’ll be missing it this year since I finally moved away from lake effect snow and long winters. I’ve attended the Syracuse NYS fair grounds show nearly every year since I moved to Syracuse in 1994 and can honestly say now after this many years its nice to have a change in scenery. It is a big show but in the past few years there has been relatively little new stuff or good deals and a whole lot of junque. It is a big show and certainly worth going to if you live in the area. The best show I managed to go to in the northeast was the Amhearst MA show but that was 3.5 hours each way from Syracuse. I’m now in Northern Virginia and finally made it to the much talked about Timonium. Timonium was actually smaller in floor space and there was virtually no SP or D&RGW HO diesels there but lots of good deals as it has the reputation for.
Anyway, enjoy the show this year in Syracuse!
Man do I agree with you on the lake effect snow!! And yes this show has it’s share of the junk guys selling the same stuff every year at the same prices. But walking around the setup tonight I did notice many vendors with lots of new stuff. I saw pretty much everything that is on the market today. This show is an annual tradition for me as I remember going as a small child with my Dad and seeing the magic in his eyes looking at all the trains. I also know that this is a huge benefit for the CNY Historical Society and I will support them and their mission as this city has some incredible railroad history. This is the city known as where the trains “ran through the streets” before the NYC elevated the line through the city. I also am one of the guys that like to support the mom and pop vendors as without them this hobby will give in to online retailers.
My address was in Liverpool from 1994 until I moved away last year. But due to the job market, the timing was finally right for me to take my leave of Wayne Mahar and the weather deck cat, and that evil term that shall not be spoken any longer!
Thats good to hear there are some vendors with a good variety at the show and if I still lived there, I’d definitly go for my fix. Having gone for the last 14 years, it had become a tradition for me, just like the State Fair and walking out the gate on the last day knowing summer was officially over and fall has begun. What I miss most was rollerblading on Onondaga Lake park - that is what kept me sane for the last 10 years.
Speaking of the city where trains “ran through the streets”. I am looking right now at one of the momento’s I took with me from Liverpool. It is a framed picture that used to sit in my ex-wife’s father’s law office in the village of liverpool on Tulip Street. It is a lithograph from the steam era showing a steam passenger train passing the back end of another passenger train in the streets of down town Syracuse. A signal man holds a stop sign for auto traffic. It is titled: Trains Passing in the Night - Vanderbilt Square 1929".
Thus passes an era of Syracuse Train shows and lake effect snow!
Don’t bite your tongue too hard on that word that is not to be mentioned anymore. I seem to recall the area you moved to being covered in 3’ + of the unmentionable stuff for well over a week earlier this year.
I wish I was still in NE PA so I could head on up to the Syracuse show. [:(]
The evil word what I wasn’t speaking wasn’t what you think it was. This thing in particular doesn’t occur in Washington DC so I guess I’ll go ahead and speak it: Lake Effect. Ok, two words technically. Its the Lake Effect snow that wears you down day in and day out - you look out your office window every day and snow is falling. Of course some of the really heavy snow is also Lake Effect. Either way, we don’t get it in Washinton DC and for that, I am thankful. That is the stuff that make you pull your hair out or want to shoot yourself by late Feb or March. Maybe I am an undiagnosed season affective dissorder person but I’m very glad to be out of central NY. For those who enjoy winters, enjoy it. Now don’t get me wrong, I grew up in northern California and snow had its uses, like skiing. I was able to leave it behind at the end of the day and drive back down into the valley.
Enjoy the train show!
You mean you arent going to miss the lake effect snow at all?? I love it. Maybe I’m just weird. This is my favorite time of year.
In VA thought I bet you are going to meet all kinds of new people in the hobby. I’ve heard great things about Timonium (sp) show. Hopefully some day I’ll make the treck to it.
Meh, I grew up in California and when I first moved to Rochester and was married, my (now ex) wife told me I was only allowed to complain about the weather once a week. Prophetic… I met people in Syracuse like you who loved the winter. Must be in the genes.
Timonium was a nice show but it was actually smaller in area than I envisioned. I’m looking forward to the change in scenery.
